RUBY CHEN (b. 2001) is a multidisciplinary artist known for her work in sculpture and painting. Fascinated by human desire and compulsion, propelled by a network of societal conditioning, Chen examines the juxtaposition between invention and the cyclical repetition of history. Inspired by ancient aesthetics, the artist’s work incorporates uncanny elements of skin-textured wax, tangled hair, and beating sounds to question the convention of “newness” and its role on the unconscious human psyche. Through juxtaposing traditional artistic techniques and cybernetics, Chen inquires on how to break free of psychological confinement and be reborn anew.
Chen’s work has recently been exhibited by NADA, NYC, Komune, NYC, and Alexia Project, Shanghai, among others. The artist’s work has been reviewed by publications such as Elephant Art Magazine, IMPULSE Magazine, Mundane Magazine, and HAZZE Media, among others. Chen is currently working towards a MA at the prestigious Royal College of Arts, London.
